
The First round of quarter-final matches in the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament were played yesterday as only 8 teams remain to battle it out for the prestigious trophy.
Spain took on Switzerland and the matchup began abruptly for the Swits national’s team as they conceded on own goal and also had star man Breel Embolo out due to an injury in the first half. Switzerland who knocked out favorites France in the round of 16 came back to life in the second half as they equalised through a crucial Xherdan Shaqiri strike and goalkeeper Yan Sommer proved vital as he made important saves to force extra time.
There was still no winner in extra time, as Spain had to win the match via penalty shootout as goalkeeper Unai Simon made two saves to make sure Spain booked their place in the semi-finals and saw Switzerland exit.
The other quarter-final matchup saw Italy take on Belgium, both teams were unbeaten in the competition and the matchup would see it’s winner take on Spain.
Italy started well as they scored first through midfielder Barella before Lorenzo Insigne grabbed what would later be a crucial goal for the Italians.
Romelu Lukaku scored from the spot late in the first half, but his goal wasn’t enough as the Azzuri won 2-1 on the right to book their place in the Semi’s and where they will face Spain.
